CHECK FOR BREAST CANCER
Women with a family history of breast cancer should start having mammograms 10 years before the age at which their relative was affected. Breast self-exams should be done monthly, just after your menses. Women over age 40 need annual mammograms.

CHECK FOR CERVICAL CANCER
The peak incidence of the pre-cancer stage is between the ages 35 and 39. This is why it is crucial that pap smears should be performed at least once every three years, but if the woman is found to carry the high risk Human Papillomavirus she should be screened every six months.

CHECK FOR COLORECTAL/COLON CANCER
For low-risk women, screening is recommended from the age of 50. In women with the history of the diseased in a relative aged 45 or younger, a colonoscopy is recommended every three years. For women with relatives afflicted after age 45, a colonoscopy is recommended every 10 years.

CHECK FOR TYROID FUNCTION
This should be included as part of any regular health screening. Common complications include hypotyroidism (weight gain, muscles aches, slow heart rate and heavier periods) and hypertyroidism (muscle weakness, hair loss, frequent weight loss and lighter periods).

CHECK FOR CHOLESTEROL LEVEL
Screening is recommended for women aged over 40. If the results are optimal, screening may be repeated in three years. For women aged 30 to 40, screening may be done for those with heart disease, stroke, diabetes and high blood pressure.

CHECK FOR TYPE 2 DIABETES
Screening is vital if there's obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and high cholesterol. For high risk women, screening should be done annually. For low risk women over age 40, screening may be repeated for three years.

CHECK FOR FERTILITY
Have a pelvic exam to exclude fibroids and ovarian cysts as these can affect fertility. Sexually active women should also consider screening for sexually transmitted disease like Chlamydia which can cause ectopic pregnancy, tubal blockage, infertility, menstrual pain and or pelvic pain.
